Tips and Tricks to Make Your Carpet Super Clean

The carpeting in your home can last for many years with the right care and maintenance. Regular vacuuming will help your carpet last a long time, so below we’ve outlined the proper way to do it. Here are several tips and tricks to make your carpet super clean.

Regular Vacuuming is Key
Your carpeting will last longer if you vacuum it regularly. Once a week is recommended, but you should do it more often if your carpeting sees a lot of foot traffic. Once a month or so, be sure to use the crevice tool that came with your vacuum to pick up dirt and debris around baseboards and other hard-to-reach areas.

Divide a Room into Sections to Ensure Complete Coverage
When vacuuming a large room with wall-to-wall carpeting, mentally divide the room into sections and finish vacuuming one section before moving onto the next. This ensures every inch of carpeting is vacuumed and nothing gets missed.

Work Slowly as You Vacuum
To get deep-down dirt out of carpeting, you need to move slowly as you vacuum, especially if the carpeting is plush. To ensure you’ve gotten all the dust and dirt from deep within the fibers, make several slow passes over each section.

Use a Crisscross Pattern on High-Traffic Areas
When vacuuming, pay special attention to high-traffic areas, including those in front of the furniture where people tend to scuff their feet. Use a crisscross pattern of overlapping passes. This raises the carpet fibers in multiple directions, loosening dirt and debris so it can be sucked away.

Apply Soil Retardants as Recommended
Soil retardants can be applied to freshly-laid and freshly-cleaned carpeting. They should only be applied using professional equipment, however, to ensure they work the way they’re supposed to and don’t harm the carpet fibers.

Baking Soda is a Great Odor Fighter
Add baking soda to your vacuum’s bag to help fight odors. Alternately, you can also apply a dusting of baking soda to the carpet itself to freshen it up. Let the baking soda sit for 10 minutes and then vacuum the carpeting thoroughly.

When it comes to keeping your carpet clean, regular vacuuming is important. Use the tips listed above to make sure you’re vacuuming your carpet correctly and it will last for many years to come.
